Anyone with new songs?

Back to The Kilderkin tomorrow (Weds) for our last gathering before another Big Night Oot at The Captain’s on Saturday.
If you’re thinking about bringing along some new songs (and fresh blood is always welcome) then remember to bring enough for everybody - about ten copies should be fine, allowing for sharing. Keep it to one page. If you think it might be a keeper - ie if you think it might be a candidate for the songbook, then email it to me (Alastair) or Robert, Jason or Lins. Then it can be uploaded to our “Prospects” folder for future replaying. Songs for the songbook should be in the style of songbook: one page, typeface is Verdana, 14pt (or larger), with the chords shown in bold. Chords can in-line, or above the lyric line, but if they’re in-line they should be in brackets.
Try to bear in mind that the song will be played by everyone from beginners to experts. Include the chords for every verse (ie, not “same as first verse”). Keep the chords simple - eg, a D7 will do, and if you prefer D7demented+11 then by all means employ some chord substitution when you play, but keep the chart itself simple for other folk.
The link below is to a template for songs, with some illustration of what we need.
The songbook is meant to be a constant work-in-progress. As new songs come along they can be slotted in, in alphabetical order. Then we can each add the new songs to our loose-leaf songbook, or add them to our tablets. It’s probably about time to weed out some of the losers too.

This edition incorporates the ones we play from the Ukulele Wednesdays songbook with our own (first edition) songbook. It’s quite long as a result, but the idea is that we do one big print then add new songs in alphabetical order. Alternatively, more of us are using tablets these days. Alternatively Alternatively we could have a collection (ie a collection for money!) and get a whole bundle printed off.

Can everyone (who cares) let me know if there are any favourites missed. In particular, are there any songs from the big (ukulele wednesdays) songbook which you think should be on the list?

The Ukulele Wednesdays Songbook has been something of a success, with most of us having access to it now. Our old songbooks are not quite redundant - most of the songs in the old songbook are in the big Uke Weds book, but there are a few left behind: Jambalaya, Meet Me On The Corner, I Washed My Hands in the Muddy Water etc etc. I’m thinking of gathering up these omissions into one Uke Hoot songbook, with a few additions (Donald - Troosers?) and then putting Harry’s magnificent ukulele lady design on the cover. Any thoughts anyone?

White Horse Woes

The problem with the White Horse is this: on Monday night I went to a folkie session there. It was double booked (until 9pm) with a political meeting. So I thought it prudent to check our booking for Wednesday. There was none, but it was then duly recorded in their diary, with my phone number in case there was any problem. However, last night we arrived to find that a party had been booked and we were not welcome.

I remonstrated (well, got a bit radge actually), insisted that the manager was phoned - the usual futile nonsense. They claimed they would have phoned me if they’d had my number, but at that point noses got longer and pants were on fire.

The bottom line is that we cannot trust the WH to honour a booking if a better offer comes along. We can’t trust them to contact us if they are going to take up the better offer.

I’d welcome views on what the next step should be. I’m not happy to continue assuring people that the event is on when that can’t necessarily be delivered (for example last night I told Beryl an hour before that it was definitely on, only to give her a wasted journey).

Since we’re now in a holiday period, when numbers might be low, we should suspend operations for a week or two and then think about a new venue.

And if you are looking for something to celebrate:

On this very day in 1961, The Shirelles made it to number one in the USA with “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?”:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIP6FSYx0LQ

This haunting song was composed by Carole King (and Gerry Goffin) when they were working in the Brill Building in New York - then the centre of “Tin Pan Alley”, home of the music publishing industry. A decade later Carole King was to record her own version on the best selling “Tapestry” album….

Because fair hoarse is what I am after a long night’s beltin it oot at Uke Hoot last night. And a braw bricht moonlicht nicht it was as celebrated the the Bard of Alloway. “My Love is Like A Red Red Rose” and “Auld Lang Syne” were given the Hoot treatment at The White Horse. Then, straying a little from the Rabster’s own compositions we had “Loch Lomond” - that has real potential as a crowd pleaser. (That is, if we had a crowd - one couldn’t help but notice that we cleared the room quite effectively). Finally, straying even further from Burnsiana, “Donald Where’s Yer Troosers”. Once was not enough for that one - could be a keeper?

Disappointing that no-one remembered “Green Grow The Rashes O!”. It seems like only yesterday that music teacher Mrs Orr was giving it laldy on the school piano at Alloway Primary School. What TF do they teach in Scottish schools nowadays? (I know, I know, sex, drugs, advanced sex and mair drugs).

There must still be some corner of the land where Burns (something of a big sex and drugs man himself) is still given pride of place because Bellshill popsters did some justice to Green Grow the Rashes O a few years back (unless it was “Green Grow the Reefers Oh?)….

Thanks also to Gwen for bringing along "Freight Train”. The Elizabeth Cotton railway classic transported us right back to the age of Skiffle. Perhaps another theme night in prospect…

If you really really want a song which is not on this list, then speak up now. Or make ten copies of your own and bring it on 19 December.

There are two obvious omissions: The Christmas Song (“Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…”) and “Jingle Bell Rock” - just couldn’t find a decent uke arrangement of either of ‘em.

So here it is:

Blue Christmas

Deck rhe Halls

Do they know it’s Christmas

Fairytale of New York

Frosty the Snowman

Happy Christmas War Is Over

Here Comes Santa Claus

White Christmas

Have Yourself a Merry etc

I Wish it Could be Christmas every day

Jingle Bells

Let It Snow

Mary’s Boy Child

Mele Kalikimaka

Merry Christmas Everybody

Come All Ye Faithful

Rockin around the Christmas Tree

Rudolf the RNR

Santa Baby

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Silent Night

Stop the Cavalry

Back to The White Horse for another Uke Hoot on Wednesday (from 7.30pm). There are two great birthdays on 19 September. In 1963 Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker was born - so we common people might have at least one song to cover.

On the same day in 1941, Mama Cass Elliot was born in Baltimore. It was Mama Cass’s voice which gave the Mamas and Papas their distinctive sound, and we could maybe have a go at their uke-friendly hit Dream a Little Dream Of Me.

Are there any special occasions to mark? Wednesday is the anniversary
of Johnny Cash’s passing in 2003 - his reputation seems to grow with
every year. So perhaps we could give “Fulsom Prison Blues” some extra
passion in his honour.

Rocking Ukes at The White Horse

A record turn out at The White Horse last night (at least a pb since
we left the Cuckoo’s Nest). We took up nearly every seat in the back
room, with only three non-ukers left trapped in a corner (they seemed
to be enjoying themselves - on a visit to Edinburgh from Albuquerque,
New Mexico).

The party atmosphere may have been in part due to the appearance of
our guests, Richard and Wendy Gibson from Adelaide. Richard is the man
behind the “Scorpex” website which has for most of us being a great
source for ukulele arrangements for many years now. Richard gave us
some helpful tips as well as leading us in the many of the songs.

Highlights of the night (for me anyway) were “Psycho Killer” and “Take
Me Home Country Roads”.

Uke Hoot meets again, next Wednesday, at the White Horse, from 7.30.

We need someone to commemorate at this week’s Uke Hoot (that’s Weds 5 Sept at The White Horse, 266 Canongate, from 7.30, btw) and there are two possible candidates….

This week (Friday to be precise) includes the birthday of specky rocker from Lubbock, Texas, Buddy Holly…

Despite being only 22 (?!) when he died in an air crash, Holly left dozens of songs which have refused to Fade Away since 1959. He also established the standard rock line up of two guitars, bass and drums, and set the trend for bands writing their own songs. It is no exaggeration to say that he launched the beat boom of the sixties, particularly in Britain where he was even more popular than in the USA (an odd Holly factette is that he may have been descended from ancient mariner Sir Francis Drake). The Hollies were named after him, and the Beatles’ name was inspired by Holly’s band, The Crickets. Keith Richards saw him play live on a UK tour, and Holly’s Not Fade Away was The Rolling Stones’ first top ten hit (a song which The Grateful Dead played live on 530 occasions).

But what would we play? Spoiled for choice, really: Peggy Sue, Everyday, That’ll be the Day, True Love Ways, Heartbeat, Crying Waiting Hoping, Oh Boy, Rave On etc etc. If I had to pick one, though, I’d go not for a Holly Song but Don Maclean’s 1972 singalong tribute, American Pie. "I can’t remember if I cried when I read about his widowed bride…“ Feb 3 is not an auspicious day for a Holly fan to board a plane.

But this week served us a reminder that it was not all groovy happenings, Austin Powers and free love in the sixties. When The Beatles and The Stones were at the height of their fame, inspired by Buddy Holly, the highest earning performer in the UK was in fact Max Bygraves, who died at the weekend. He collected 31 gold discs, mainly from the Singalongamax series in the early seventies. There are a few vaguely amusing songs in the Bygraves’ oeuvre - we could try You Need Hands, memorably covered by those other lovable Cockney rogues, The Sex Pistols, or Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellenbogen By The Sea, or perhaps best of all Lionel Bart’s wonderful Fings Ain’t Wot They Used To Be.
